Calais and the surrounding area

It’s hard to list everything you can do in Calais. Here are a few ideas to take your mind off a game of chess.

Numerous bars and restaurants await you, particularly in the Calais Nord district. Here’s a link with addresses and prices. You can also ask us for advice, as we know all the right places to go: restaurants and hotels.

The seafront was renovated a few years ago. A great place for a stroll by the sea. Youngsters will find plenty of games and a giant skate park. Sunbathers can relax on the sunbeds. And you’re sure to come across a strange animal: the dragon. Maybe after meeting him on the chessboard.

There’s also plenty to do in Calais. The most classic:

  • The Lace Museum
  • The town hall belfry
  • The lighthouse
  • Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Museum of Fine Arts
  • The Dragon Company

If you want to take advantage of this tournament week to do a bit of sightseeing, there’s plenty to do not far from Calais.
Why not take a bye and get away for a while?
For nature lovers, there’s the Opal Coast and its beaches. The inevitable Cap Blanc Nose, with its many hiking trails. The Sangatte dike, the Wissant dike, the Wimereux dike… There’s plenty to do.
There’s also a major tourist attraction: the Nausicaa center in Boulogne Sur Mer (35 km from Calais. Allow 3-4 hours for a visit).
And for those who want to travel a little further afield: Le Touquet and Lille (about an hour’s drive from Calais).
